Clinical Rotations at Cone Health System

Cone Health System – Greensboro, NC

This rotation provides a combination of both pediatric, prenatal and cancer genetic counseling experiences in a community health system. The pediatrics clinic consists of a wide variety of clinical concerns including developmental delay, chromosomal and microarray abnormalities, skeletal dysplasias, and many other genetic diagnoses.

Testing options vary but include blood chromosome studies, microarray testing, molecular studies, metabolic screening, and other specific disorder testing. The prenatal clinics consist of patients who are advanced maternal age, have positive prenatal screening results or have significant family history concerns. Testing options in this setting include ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis including chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis and screening options including noninvasive prenatal testing and ethnic based carrier testing.

This unique community rotation experience allows students the opportunity to attend monthly Multidisciplinary Antenatal Advisory Committee meetings where the approach, management and follow up of prenatal and pediatric genetics patients are discussed by a team of prenatal and postnatal specialists. Students may be involved in presenting at these meetings.

Students will also be involved in cancer genetic counseling for patients with family and personal histories of various cancer diagnoses and/or inherited cancer predisposition syndromes. Students will be involved in facilitating appropriate genetic testing and performing case preparation and follow up roles in patient care. Cancer genetic counseling is performed at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro, NC, which is a part of the Cone Health System.
