Hiya everyone! My name is Daniel Torres, and I am from Kernersville, North Carolina. All throughout undergrad, I worked as a CNA II at differing hospitals between Winston-Salem and Boone, NC. After graduating from Appalachian State University, I continued to work on my clinical skills and expertise as a CNA II at Atrium Health Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. In the Summer of 2021, after 8 months of working full-time, I decided to complete my pre-medical prerequisites at UNCG so I could apply for medical school.
While completing my prerequisite studies, I learned about genetic counseling during BIO 111 (Principles of Biology I). After doing further research, I realized that this career better suited my strengths and personality along with providing me with the privilege to connect with future patients at a deeper level than I would have as a M.D., which was informed by my experience working with doctors within the hospital.
In the Summer of 2022, I began working as a Social/Clinical Research Assistant in the Department of Genetics at UNC. There, I worked as a coordinator for the Community Research Board (CRB) and the Community Engagement and Education Committee (CEECo) groups in the Age-Based Genomics Screening (ABGS) project and the coordinator for the Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen) Partnership Work Group (PWG) and FDA Regulation Work Group (FDAWG). The greatest lesson I learned about myself while working in this role was that I can relate to anyone despite any initial differences between us, which is super helpful not only in genetic counseling, but also life in general!
In my free time, I am an avid video gamer, enjoy getting to know new people, and love to hit the gym every once in a while, so I can stay in tip-top shape. To those interested in learning more about UNCG’s genetic counseling program, the field of genetic counseling, or what life in Greensboro is like, please feel free to reach out! I do not bite, I promise. (:
