Hey y’all! My name is Maddy Thomas, I am from Huntsville, Alabama and I graduated from Auburn University in the spring of 2022 with a B.S in Genetics (War Eagle!).

While in high school, I was a part of a Biomedical Program. I knew I loved working with patients but struggled to find the right fit within the medical system. I found Genetic Counseling after having an interest in obstetrics and wanting to help be an advocate for those who may not be able to speak up for themselves. I knew that this field was for me when I saw that I could use my passion for being a support for patients during a difficult time with my love for genetics.

Knowing that I wanted to apply for genetic counseling programs helped to shape my time at Auburn University. Wanting to develop my strengths as a leader, I was a Student Ambassador with the United MSD Foundation, I worked as a supplemental instructor (SI) for genetics as well as a peer mentor for other SI’s, I was an undergraduate researcher for a genetics lab and then worked as the Lab Manager for them as well, and I was apart of the Executive Board for my sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma.

After I graduated, I wanted to get more hands-on experience in the field so I got a position as a GCA at HudsonAlpha working with a team of 5 GC’s. This position was unique because I was the only GCA and the group worked closely together to do education outreach, research, as well as seeing patients. The mentorship I got from the team has driven my passion even more for this career and has shaped me in how I see the scope of a GC.

In my free time I love to listen to Taylor Swift, tell horribly bad puns, and go on nature walks (as long as it’s not too hot).  Please reach out to me if you want to learn more about the UNCG Program, moving to Greensboro from out of state, or if you have any questions! Applying to GC programs can be overwhelming so I know that any of my amazing classmates or I would be happy to answer any questions to make it seem easier 🙂
