Hi! My name is Lanni Poythress, and I am from Harrisburg, NC. I first learned about genetic counseling in undergrad at a genetics-focused club meeting. I am excited by the unique position that genetic counselors occupy to listen to and advocate for patients as they make decisions about their health.

During my undergraduate experience at the University of Georgia (go dawgs), I had the opportunity to work as a genetic counseling assistant in a cancer genetic counseling clinic. Additionally, I conducted research in a genetics research lab, the Rozario Lab, focused on characterizing genes involved in the proliferation of stem cells in H. diminuta, commonly known as the rat tapeworm. I worked as a tour leader at the UGA Visitor’s Center, serving as a resource for prospective undergraduate students. During my senior year, I volunteered with Extra Special People, an organization aimed at creating transformative experiences for people with disabilities in Northeast Georgia. I also volunteered with Conversations to Remember, engaging in meaningful conversations with seniors in memory care facilities, and with Crisis Text Line as a crisis counselor.

In my free time I love to watch football and soccer, go for a long walk, try a new sweet treat, play the Wii, and swim. I welcome student contact and would be happy to answer any questions that prospective students may have. Please reach out!
