Hi! My name is Joseph Nsonwu-Farley. I am a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, and I graduated from NC State University with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a B.A. in Psychology in the winter of 2018.

During my time at NC State, I explored many different career paths (pharmaceutical manufacturing and design, mental health counseling, and academic research) and hobbies (boxing, triathlon, fermentation, and scuba diving). The most pivotal of my undergraduate experiences were my opportunities to TA for introductory biochemistry and microbiology courses and the volunteer and reflection opportunities that I participated in as a Caldwell Fellow. Through the mentorship provided by my professors and peers I solidified a desire to help people understand their physiological and social selves. My final year of college I attended a fair for health science graduate programs and learned about genetic counseling from UNCG’s very own program! That was the beginning of my journey to become a genetic counselor.

In the years since graduating, I have had the good fortune to work with some great people. I spent 3 years at the Troester Lab at UNC Chapel Hill, whose research focused on underrepresented populations in the Carolina Breast Cancer Study is an example to all researchers concerned with correcting historic inequities in health care. I have just recently returned to NC from Atlanta where I worked at the Adjust Center Lab, which is a technology translation lab formed in collaboration between Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta that focuses on accelerating approval for and expanding access to medical technologies.

In my free time I like to swim, run, rock climb, make pottery, cook, play board/tabletop games, and go to restaurants or breweries with friends. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about changes in career trajectory, the application process, or anything else from above!
