After graduation, Heidi worked as a genetic counselor at Duke University for 17 years. Most of her genetic counseling career at Duke was spent as part of multidisciplinary research groups, such as the Undiagnosed Diseases Network, utilizing advanced genomic technologies to elucidate the genetic basis of rare diseases. In January, Heidi joined RTI International as a senior research genetic counselor with the Early Check newborn screening program. In her new role she will coordinate expansion of the Early Check project to screen newborns for actionable genetic conditions using genomic sequencing.

Heidi and her husband celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary in July along with their 15-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son. In her spare time Heidi is an animal welfare advocate and volunteer with the Human Society of the United States and Independent Animal Rescue.
