Hi! My name is Amber, and I moved to Greensboro from Huntsville, Alabama. My interest in genetic counseling was first sparked through my coursework at UAB, where I took a lab-based precision medicine course that opened my eyes to the potential intersections of genetic research and rare disease. I stayed involved with the Precision Medicine Institute at UAB throughout my undergraduate career through various roles including teaching assistant positions and as a research assistant studying SLC6A1 genetic variants in zebrafish models in the Crowder lab. These opportunities allowed me to connect with families affected by genetic diagnoses and to see firsthand how experts in rare disease can make a meaningful difference in these individuals’ lives. During my time at UAB, I was involved in several different research projects related to the experiences of individuals affected by a diagnosis. These experiences solidified my interest in the intersections of genetics and education (and my interest in genetic counseling by association!).

After I graduated from UAB, I spent my gap year working at the Smith Family Clinic for Genomic Medicine in Huntsville, AL. This job was challenging in all the best ways, allowing me to learn how to be a valuable resource to patients and coworkers alike while building on the skills in time management, education, and communication that have continued to benefit me during graduate school.

In my free time, I’m typically a homebody! I love reading, cooking, and hanging out with my partner and my cats. However, it’s easy to get me out of the house if food, drinks, thrifting, and/or live music are involved.

I’m always open to student contact—feel free to reach out if you ever have questions about applications, genetic counseling school, GCA experiences, or just want to see a picture of my cats!
