Hello! My name is Megan Criley, and I’m from Castle Rock, Colorado. I first learned about genetic counseling during my Biotechnology class in high school. After further research and listening to my aunts personal genetic counseling experience I knew this was the career path for me. I appreciate the combination of genetics, education, and advocacy that this career offers.

During my undergrad experience I was a TA for introductory biology course. I was also on the leadership board for a variety of different organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Students for St. Jude, and Sigma Kappa Sorority. I worked in two different research labs. For my first two years I was working at Dr. Aung’s plant genetics lab where I researched the UGT1 gene’s role the deposition of Callose in the plasmodesmata. During my final year at ISU, I was part of Dr. Kohut’s nanovaccine lab, where we investigated whether physical activity could enhance the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine.

After graduating, I spent my two gap years working at the University of Colorado Rheumatology department. I worked as a clinical researcher mainly on the ALTRA Study which is an observational study that aims to find ways to prevent rheumatoid arthritis. I really enjoyed learning how to best care for our participants and explain results to them. I also designed a study looking at how to best report genetic results in a research setting. I also spent time working with the Phoenix Center on campus which was a counseling and education center for victims of interpersonal violence and working with Special Olympics.

In my free time, I enjoy hiking, camping, skiing and baking. I welcome student contact, so please feel free to email me with any questions regarding the genetic counseling field, applications, or UNCG’s program.
