Hello! My name is Jamie Cook and I am from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I first learned about genetic counseling during freshman year. After trying other paths, I found my way back to genetic counseling after reflecting on my values of education and support. I graduated in 2022 with a degree in genetics and psychology, and after taking a year off, I am excited to be pursuing genetic counseling at UNCG.
Throughout undergrad, I was a TA for introductory biology courses and volunteered at a crisis chat/hotline that supports survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault. I also worked on campus at our writing/media center and as a student role model, where I visited local schools to present fun STEM related activities.
After graduation, I worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as a clinical research assistant. I spoke with adult cancer patients about participating in various observational research studies and collected medical history from enrolled patients. I learned a lot from this role and am thankful to have had this experience before graduate school.
In my free time, I enjoy fishing and spending time outdoors, cooking, and watching reality TV. I always welcome student contact, so please feel free to email me with any questions regarding the genetic counseling field, applications, or UNCG’s program!
