Hello! My name is Sydni Beeley, and I am from Lawrence, Kansas. I first learned about genetic counseling in my high school pre-med course, which led me to shadow a pediatric genetic counselor. I appreciated all the opportunities to educate and provide autonomy to individuals and families, and knew genetic counseling was the ideal career for me.
I attended Truman State University for my undergraduate degree. While there, I was involved in various organizations and played collegiate soccer. Most notably, I was the founder and President of our Pre-Genetic Counseling Organization. I also did research in Dr. Miller’s computational biochemistry lab, where I studied the specificity of a drug for Alzheimer’s disease towards amyloid beta aggregates. In the summers, I worked at an overnight camp for children and adults with disabilities. I absolutely loved my experiences there and am passionate about environments that promote inclusivity and belonging.
After graduating, I spent time as a microbiologist at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. I worked in the virology unit and the state’s Newborn Screening (NBS) Program. I enjoyed learning all that goes into NBS and the importance of public health initiatives. I also spent time as a volunteer with Special Olympics and as an advocate for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.
In my free time, I enjoy exercising, crafting, being outside, and spending time with friends. Feel free to send me an email if you have any questions about UNCG’s program, the LEND traineeship, applications, or genetic counseling!
