B.S. Biology, University of Iowa (2025)
I’m Jacob Roling, and I’m originally from Riverside, Iowa. I attended The University of Iowa where I earned a B.S. in Biology and pursued a minor in Human Relations. I graduated from The University of Iowa in the spring of 2025 and moved to Greensboro over the summer. My interest in becoming a genetic counselor stems from previously being a caregiver for individuals with dementia.
While in undergrad, I also assisted in conducting research using C. elegans as a model organism in the study of protein aggregation. Undergraduate research particularly made me aware of how protein aggregation has an association with the cause for dementia. I was drawn to the profession of genetic counseling because I saw an opportunity to bridge the interpersonal aspects involved with being a caregiver and the features of conveying scientific information that I utilized as a student researcher. Working with others and being a facilitator of learning was a skill that I additionally crafted as a peer mentor to undergraduates, so I felt that genetic counseling compiled the things that I enjoyed most within my aforementioned experiences.
In my day-to-day life, I enjoy working out, watching superhero movies or shows, and just being outside. I’d be more than happy to respond to prospective students’ questions, so please feel free to reach out.
